Indicator is a substance that changes the color of a solution in order to detect the presence of certain ions in it. It can also be used to indicate the presence of completion of a reaction in order to test for a chemical reaction by color change

While performing a titration, we slowly add one solution of a known concentration to another known volume but without knowing concentration. This process of adding titrant to another solution is performed until neutralization is achieved.

So, in order to determine the concentration of unknown solution, an indicator is required to check if the standard solution has been added to fully react with unknown solution. And an indicator is a vital as it acts as a key success for a reaction.

Titration is the process of determining the volumes of reagents(or solutions),required for the just completion of a reaction. The point at which the reaction is just completed is called the equivalence point, and this is judged by adding a very small amount of an auxillary reagent, called indicator. The indicator produces a clear visual change as soon as the reaction is overstepped;either a change in colour take place or a turbidity is produced in the reaction mixture. For example phenolpthalein, methyl orange etc.

Indicators are special chemicals that change color if there is a change in the pH ( caused by adding an acid or alkali ) .Indicators change colors at different pH values. For example, litmus changes color at pH 7.
