The Crum–Brown–Gibson rule states that the substituent already present on the benzene ring is considered to be linked to hydrogen (i.e., the benzene ring can be replaced by a hydrogen atom), and if the corresponding compound can be directly oxidized, then the second incoming group takes up the positionmetato the existing substituent; otherwise, the incoming group would enter the position eitherparaororthoto the existing substituent.
