The chemical substances which are used to bring down body temperature (in cases like high fever) are called antipyretics. An antipyretic drug affects the hypothalamic centre of the body, which activates the dilation of peripheral blood vessels. This increases perspiration, which helps the body lose heat.
Examples of antipyretics are:
  • Aspirin - 2-acetoxybenzoic acid
  • Paracetamol - 4-ethoxyacetanilide
