The actual question is what is the product when C6H5CHO react with C2H5OH/Na?I thought answer must be C2H5OH as aldehyde do reduction in presence of C2H5OH but I was wrong because the answer is Vic diol.I don't understand it because it require lots of energy to break bond in aeromatic ring, and if answer is wrong then what is the correct answer. Please explain this to me.

Aromaticity is the major factor in organic chemistry. It makes the organic molecule highly stable and molecule dont want to lose that stability...i.e why we dont see nucleophillic addition reaction in benzene.
