both phenyl group and methyl group can donate electrons to carbocation phenyl group donate by conjugation , that is using their p orbital to overlap with unused orbitals of carbocation and allow electrons to go their , 
however , methyl group donate only by slight interaction between C-H bonding orbitals and unused orbitals of carbocation , which is obviously weaker ,
