rust is basically an oxidation process.in presence of salt solution loss of electron takes place more easily which facilitates the combination of iron and oxygen forming reddish brown substance in outer layer.when the water is salty it starts with minor acid and even become more powerful electrolyte.it speeds up the reaction between oxygen and iron.
