R-X + KCN → R-CN + KX . We use alcoholic medium in this reaction.
But this reaction follows SN2 mechanism. In SN2 mechanism we need polar aprotic solvent. But here alcohol is a polar protic solvent.

Why we use alcohol instead of ether or any type of polar aprotic solvent?

see if there r is bulky group then it goes through sn1 then otherwise sn2

so for determining r should be given
