Pls give tips on selecting the main chaing during iupac nomenclature when there are many branched substituents?

first give priority to the chain containing functional groups like carboxylic acid, sulphonic acid, oic anhydrides....... alcohol, thioalcohol, amine, epoxy. 
 
if there are no substituents go for the numbering the chain with double or triple bonds. ( double bond has more priority over triple bond) 
 
start numbering the chain from where the substituents/pi-bonds get the lowest locant number.
