Phenol on treating with conc.nitric acid yields 2,4,6-trinitrophenol.This compound is known as picric acid.But the yield was poor so nowdays Phenol is first treated with conc.H₂SO₄which forms 2,4-disulphonic acid which is later on treating with conc.HNO₃ gives 2,4,6-trinitrophenol i.e picric acid.
