Oh and nh2 are ewd in chain structure because oxygen and nitrogen are more electronegative. But they also have lone pairs of electrons and therefore when attached to aromatic compound they can show resonance and hence they give these lone pair of electrons and become stable due to resonance hence when connected to aromatic compound the behave as electron donating group
