tollen`s test is a test for -CHO functional group . in the reaction with tollen`s reagent , the -CHO ( aldehydic group ) of the reactant is involved in the complex formation and as methonic acid ( - HCOOH ) contains -CHO group , it is the only acid which give tollen`s test ! where as in the ethanoic acid the -H is replaced by -CH3 , so it won`t and so are the remaining acids .
