H2/Ni reduces double bonds and tripple bonds selectivly.

We know that in ester there is resonance takin place so the effective bond number is actually less than 2.But in case of CN the bond number is less than 3 but greater than 2. So the hydrogen has a greater tendency to attack the CN group than the ester functional group.
