In cross cannizzaro why is only Formaldehyde always used and reduced? Can we use something other than formaldehyde too? And in Intramolecular Cannizzaro, how does one know which part of the dicarbonyl group will get oxidised and which will get reduced? What is the general reaction for both Intramolecular and Cross? General meaning: In form of R- (Alkyl Groups) rather than just stating examples as are often stated in books

We can use other organic compounds, too, for crossed canizzaro reaction as, basically it is just a cannizaro reaction and requires an aldehyde that`s not having an alpha-hydrogen.
