Acetone forms a yellow precipitate of iodoform on warming with iodine and NaOH solution. Methanol does not respond to iodoform test.

There are various process for distinguish them.1> If you heat both by adding 2,4-DNP then Acetone produce orange or yellow colour crystal but Ethanol does not show this.also,2> If you heat by mixing glacial acetic acid and Conc. H2SO4 then ethanol produce Ethyl acetate with special smell. But acetone does not give any compound with special smell.By this two method you can distinguish them.Perhaps it will help you.Thanks.
