First convert ethanol into ethanoic acid(CH3COOH) by strong oxidation. Then apply decarboxylation reaction- that is reaction of ethanoic acid with CaO and NaOH which will lead to reduction of number of carbons in the organic species, conberting it to alkane, that is CH4(ome carbon less than ethanoic acid and an alkane). Now since alkanes are very less reactive, react it with Cl2 in sunlight. This will form CH3Cl. Finally oxidise it, which will form CH3OH-methanol.Hope this helps..

First convert ethanol to ethylene by strong H2SO4 and heat. Then perform reductive ozonolysis (i.e O3 + Zn/H2O) to produce formaldehyde. Then reduce it with LiAlH4 and you will get methanol. That`s it.I think it will help you. Thanks.
