Let's imagine any group R. This R group is attached to a carbon. Certainly, that carbon is part of a larger chain. If that certain carbon is attached with:
  1. 1 carbon,  then it will be primary (also called 1°)
  2. 2 carbons, then it will be secondary (also called 2°)
  3. 3 carbons, then it will be tertiary (also called 3°)
  4. 4 carbons, then it will be quaternary (also called 4°)
