As we know diabetes mellitus is a common disorder wherein the insulin secretion is lowered. When a condition of uncontrolled situation occurs in diabetes, this leads to severe metabolic acidosis.

Now, in this situation the kidneys compensate for metabolic acidosis by reabsorbtion of titratable acid part of which is made of ketone body acids.

The compensation for acidosis is done by increased renal synthesis and excretion of ammonia.
