On the basis of the nature of forces between the constituent particles solids can be classified into four:
(1) Molecular solids
They can be further classified into three:
         (i)   Non polar molecular solids
Here atoms or molecules are held together by weak dispersion or london forces
               eg;H2, I2, etc.
         (ii)  Polar molecular solids
Here molecules are held together by dipole-dipole interactions
eg; solid NH3, solid SO2, etc.
         (iii)  Hydrogen bonded molecular solids
Here molecules are held together by strong hydrogen bonding
               eg; H2O, HF, etc.
(2) Ionic solids
Here ions are held together by coulombic or electrostatic forces.
    eg; NaCl, ZnS, etc.
(3) Metallic solids
Here constituent particles are held together by metallic bonding
    eg; Fe, Ag, etc.
(4) Covalent or network solids
Here atoms are held together by covalent bonding
    eg;Graphite, Diamond, etc.
