Dear student
Hunsdiecker reaction
This reaction is used for the preparation of bromoalkanes only. It involves the reaction of silver salts of carboxylic acids with the solution of bromine in carbon tetrachloride. For example, bromoethane is obtained from silver propanoate.
CH3 – CH2 – COOAg  +  Br2 -------------------------------> CH3 – CH2 – Br + CO2 + AgBr
In this reaction, the alkyl bromide obtained will have one carbon atom less than the carbon atoms present in the starting carboxylic acid.
