we can use an aldehyde with grignard reagent to produce an alcohol which on reaction with red P/HI will give corresponding alkane.
Red P/HI can reduce any functional group to alkane.
ethyl magnesium chloride + octanaldehyde + H3O+\rightarrowdecan-3-ol
decan-3-ol+red P/HI\rightarrowdecane
