Diborane is the chemical compound consisting of boron and hydrogen with the formula B2H6. It is a colorless and highly unstable gas at room temperature.
On the basis of hybridisation its structure can be explained as – Boron atom has atomic no. 5 so its configuration is-1s2,2s2,2p1.Thus in excited state it will have the configuration: 2s1,2px1 2py1 2pz0 assumes sp3 hybrid state in B2H6.One of the four sp3 hybrid orbital is vacant. Two of the sp3 hybrid orbitals form 4 sigma bonds with 1s-orbitals of H-atoms.The third hybird orbital containig unpaired e- overlaps simultaneously with 1s-orbital of the H-atom and vacant hybrid orbital of the adjacent boron atom to constitute three centre e- pair bond and this is represented as B....H.....B.The hydrogen atom involved in it is bridge hydrogen. Its sturcture is shown below--
