The atoms of a compound are held together by chemical bonds which are formed by the interaction of electrons from each atom.Elements participate in chemical bonding so as to acquire noble gas configuration.According to the octet rule, atoms bond together to form molecules in such a way that each atom participating in bonding acquires an electron configuration resembling that of the nearest noble gas in the periodic table. Thus the outer shell of each bonded atom will contain eight electrons (or two electrons for hydrogen and lithium). Elements can form different types of bonds depending on their partner atoms. For ex-Ionic bond, covalent bond.
1. Ionic bond--It is type of chemical bond where two atoms or molecules are connected to each other by electrostatic attraction. This bond is formed when a nonmetal and a metal exchange electrons.Ionic bonds are formed between a cation which is usually a metal and an anion which is usually a nonmetal, both are bonded to each other by electrostatic force of attraction. For ex- NaCl,CaCl2 etc.
2. Covalent bond--A type of chemical bond where two atoms are connected to each other by the sharing of two or more electrons.Non-metals form covalent bonds with other non-metals so as to obtain stability.Non-metals can form one to three covalent bonds with other non-metals depending on depending on how many valence electrons they possess. For ex- Cl2,H2,O2,HCl etc
