**FOR A GIVEN ANION, WHY DOES THE COVALENT CHARACTER INCREASE WITH A DECREASE IN SIZE OF THE CATION?

Covalent character is in accordance with fajans rules. The covalent character is more either when polarizing power of cation is more. But the polarizing power of cation is more when its charge density is more. So, if the size of the cation is less then obviously its charge density will be more, thus impartimg more covalent character.
