Steric hindrance is most often because a reaction site on a molecule is blocked by large atoms forming part of the molecule. Simple example : Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) cannot be hydrolysed because the Cl atoms are so large they block access of water to the C at the centre of the molecule - steric hindrance

Steric hindrance at a given atom in a molecule is the congestion caused by the physical presence of the surrounding ligands, which may slow down or prevent reactions at the atom.
ex - the carbonyl carbon is bonded to two hydrogen atoms. , it is bonded to a hydrogen atom and a methyl group. Since the methyl group is larger than the hydrogen atom, steric hindrance is greater at the carbonyl carbon .
Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) cannot be hydrolysed because the Cl atoms are so large they block access of water to the C at the centre of the molecule - steric hindranc
