acetic acid , which have 2 carbon in the parent chain are soluble in water , benzoic acid , on the other hand has a benzene ring . this indicates that 
benzoic acid have a larger molecular weight 
has a large non polar area in its structure that will overwhelm the polar carboxyl group , making it poorly soluble in water
