Step-1:-Chlorination of ethane. Ethane is treated with chlorine to form ethyl chloride. Step-2:-Conversion of ethyl chloride into propanoic acid. Ethyl chloride on reaction with alcoholic KCN gives ethyl cyanide, which on hydrolysis gives propanoic acid.
