METHANE ON CHLORINATION GIVES CHLOROMETHANE ON WURTZ SYNTHESIS GIVES ETHANE

ETHANE ON CHLORINATION GIVES CHLOROETHANE ON REACTION WITH AQ.KOH GIVES ALCOHOL ON OXIDATION FORMS ACETIC ACID ON REACTION WITH NaOH GIVES SODIUM FORMATE FINALLY THIS ON REACTION WITH SODALIME  GIVES METHANE

Methane on chlorination gives chloro methane and on wurtz fittig law it gives ethane
in this way to convert ethane from methane 3 steps should be followed  and ethane can be obtained easily

Wurtz Reaction will be the best. Reacting the compound with chlorine to first form it’s chloride then reacting it with CH3I and Na to give a higher homologous product(It is a Step-Up Reaction).
To convert Ethane to methane,
Convert the compound to it’s carboxylic acid and then react it with NaOH & CaO. It will give a lower homologous pair of Hydro Carbon(it’s a step dow reaction).

Dear Student

Conversion of Methane to Ethane
Step 1 ;Methane reacts with chlorine gas under the ultraviolet light to give chloro-methane.
CH4 + Cl2 → CH3Cl + HCl

Step 2: Treat chloro-methane with sodium metal with dry ether which will give ethane as a product. This is known as Wurtz Reaction.
2CH3Cl + 2Na → C2H6 + 2NaCl

Conversion of Ethane to Methane
Convert the compound to it’s carboxylic acid and then react it with NaOH & CaO.
C2H6 + Cl2 → C2H5Cl (in presence of sunlight)
C2H5Cl + KOH → C2H5OH
C2H5OH → CH3COONa (in presence of K2Cr2O7/H2SO4)
CH3COONa + Cao + NaOH → CH4 (heating)

I hope this answer will help you.
Thanks & Regards
