Dear student
A centre of symmetry is a point within the molecule from which any straight line when drawn on one side and extended an equal distance on the other side will meet identical atoms on both sides. Compounds that posses centre of symmetry are achiral and optically inactive but molecules that do not posses centre of symmetry are generally; but not necessarily, chiral and optically active.
