Benzyl bromide reacts with H2O in formic acid solution to yield benzyl alcohol, the rate is independent of [H2O]. Under the same conditions p-methyl benzyl bromide reacts 58 times as fast.
Benzyl bromide reacts with NaOEt in EtOH to yield benzyl ethyl ether; the rate depends on both [RBr] and [OEt-].
