Compounds derived from hydrocarbons by the replacement of one or more hydrogen atoms by halogen atoms are known as halogen derivatives of carbon.
The halogen derivatives of alkanes are called alkyl halides or halo alkanes whereas halogen derivatives of alkenes and alkynes are respectively known as alkenyl halides and alkynyl halides.
