hi,

suppose the intermadiate formed is a carbocation ,if it is possible to make it a more stable carbocation then ring expansion is favoured.

and same with the caranion but there contraction......

Organic compounds ..... contacts or expands ring....to get more stable structure....
Expansion or contraction is done by methyl shift or hydride shift
 
It helps the compound to get stable structure.....

4,5 member ring goes to 6(expansion)
 
7,8 member ring goes to 6 (contraction)
