Q.Carbon shows tetra valency. It exists CH4 as well as CH3 by removing hydrogen. How is it possible?

Carbon shows tetravalency. CH3+ exists as a carbocation which is relativly less stable than the CH4 counterpart.

carbon could exists as ch3 only when it forms free radical i.e. in presence of sunlight.

free radicals r formed by homolytic cleavage of C H bond.

carbon free radical are of two types singlet and triplet(for more info. u can refer morryson&boyd)

ch4 in presence of light(u.v) breaks up into hydrogen free radical H' AND CH3' FREE RADICAL.
