bond order =1/2(no.of bonding electrons-no.of antibonding electrons)

Bond Order = No. Of Bonding Electrons + No. of Anti-Bonding Electrons  / 2

There are two formulae:

1. Based on Molecular Orbital Theory

Bond Order= No of bonding e+ No of antibonding e-

2. Based on Resonance Theory

Bond Order= No of bonds between two given atoms

No of Resonating Structures

 

THE FIRST FORMULA IS PREFERRED!
