Dear terri,
There are four different basic organic compounds in the human body; proteins, carbohydrates, lipids or fats, and nucleic acids. Proteins are the building blocks of the body and make up about 70% of all body compounds. Carbohydrates are important for energy and also contribute to building connective tissues. They are what hold the block together. And then there are fats, or lipids. They contribute to many important functions. One main one is that they are needed by every cell in the body to produce the phospholipid bilayer known as the cell membrane. They are also important for energy storage and the production of certain hormones.
