Dear Haritha

Compounds having the same molecular formula but different number of carbon atoms ( alkyl groups) on either side of functional group ( i.e., -O-,-S-, -NH-, -C(=O)-) are called metamers and the phenomenon is called metamerism. metamerism occurs amongst the members of the same homologus family. For example,

CH3CH2-O-CH2CH3 is metamer of CH3-O-CH2CH2CH3 OR CH3-O-CH(CH3)2

CH3CH2COCH2CH3 is metamer of CH3COCH2CH2CH3 OR CH3COCH(CH3)2

It may be noted that metamers may also be position isomers, e.g., pentan-2-one and pnetan-3-one may be regarded as position isomers as well as metamers.

All the best.

Metamerism in chemistry is the type of isomerism in which chemical compounds have identical proportions of the same elements and the same molecular weight, but have radicals differing in type or position, with resulting differences in chemical properties.

It is such a type of isomerism which arises due to different alkyl chains on either side of the functional group in the molecule. For example methoxypropane(Ch3OC3H7) and ethoxyethane (C2H5OC2H5).

Metamerism is whereby different atoms or group are link to the same functional group. Metamer belong to the same homologous series. For example their are three alkoxyalkanes (ether) corresponding to the molecular formula C

metamerism isomers differs only by the nature of alkyl group attached to ether oxygen
example: ch3ch2och2ch3 and ch3och2ch2ch3

Metamerism is nothing but position isomerism iof functional group with two point of linkage (like ketones, ethers..)
