first step convert bromo bezene toluene by wurtz reaction bromo benzene +ch3cl +2Na =toluene second step oxidation of toulene by using KMnO4 toluene +KMnO4 =benzoic acid third step reduction of benzoic acid by LiAlH4 benzoic acid + LiAlH4=benzyl alcohol

first convert PhBr into grinard reagent by using Mg in the pressence of dry ether then on reaction with formaldehyde (HCOH) with this grinard reagent (PhMgBr) followed by hydrolysis we get benzyl alcohol..
