A basic generalization of scalar and vector quantities is a tensor. We assign zero rank to a scalar and first rank to a vector.

While looking at the number of directions that we utilize to describe the quantities it is the order or rank of a tensor. Properties with first rank will be described by 3 x 1 column vector and two directions are second rank tensors.
