Thespecific latent heatof a substance is the quantity of heat energy required to change the state of a unit mass of a substance.

EL= mlwhere ELis the heat transferred, in joules, m is the mass, in kilograms, andlis the latent heat in joules per kilogram.

The SI unit for specific latent heat is J/kg.

Thespecific latent heat of fusionis the quantity of heat energy released when 1 kg of a substance solidifies (i.e.fuses) without changing its temperature.

Thespecific latent heat of vaporizationis the quantity of heat energy needed to vaporize 1 kg of a substance without changing its temperature.

Heat capacity, orthermal capacity, is themeasurablephysical quantityofheatenergy required to change thetemperatureof an object by a given amount. TheSIunit of heat capacity isjouleperkelvin,\mathrm{\tfrac{J}{K}}and thedimensional formis M1L2T-2T-1.
