for monoatomic , He type

f = 3

KE = 3kT/2

 

for dia atomic           (H2 type)

f = 5

KE = 5kT/2

 

fror triatomic          (CO2 type)

f = 6

KE = 6kT/2

 

for monoatomic f = 3 , total energy is translational KE ...

for dia atomic , f =5 , 3 for translational & 2 for rotational KE

for tri atomic , f =6 , 3 for translational, 2 for rotational & 1 for vibrational KE ...
