Viscosity is due to the friction between the adjacent layers of the laminar flow of the fluid. In a narrow channel, the flow of the fluid is steady or laminar. So, there is viscosity in the fluid and it must be taken into account.
But there is no laminar flow in the relatively unconfined channel. The fluid layers cross each other and makes the flow turbulent. So, viscosity is not taken into account for a fluid flow in a relatively unconfined channel.
