Why does a long bar help a tightrope walker to keep his or her balance?

The tightrope walker uses the long bar to increase its rotational inertia. The increased rotational inertia makes it difficult for the gravitational force to turn the walker about its axis of rotation and in the meanwhile the walker gets enough time to restore its balance again.
