question mark

When a wet dog shakes itself, people standing nearby tend to get wet. Why does the water fly outward from the dog in this way?

Dear student

It is a combination of centripetal force (moves skin a circle) just lagging behind the muscle wave, and also how surface tension holds and releases water. Astonishingly in under 5 seconds they will have shook off nearly 3/4 of the water in their coat. My Borzois definitely needed to be avoided when wet... I`d get very wet indeed if the shaking wasn`t spotted soon enough!

Hope it helps

The water drops stuck to the dog’s body due to adhesive force between the body and the water droplets. these adhesive forces can provide the necessary centripetal force to water droplets to move with the dog’s body. When the dog shakes his body quickly, the centripetal force increases than adhesive forces. Hence the water drops detach and flies away. therefore the people standing nearby it will get wet.
