moment of inertia is  a measure of how difficult it is to rotate a particular body about a given axis.
significance:
Greater the mass concentrated away from the axis, greater the moment of inertia.
Take a baseball club. If you rotate it by holding the handle, you have to put in more effort than when you rotate it by holding it at the hitting end.

So we should consider its moment with centre. Because it is deplaced w.r.t centre. ... Moment of inertia is a measure of how difficult it is to rotate a given body about a given axis. Significance: greater the mass concentrated away from the axis,greater the moment of inertia.

In translation motion,mass is a measure of inertia,in the same way,for rotational motion, moment of inertia is a measure of rotational motion. In general, massis an invariable quantity of matter (except for motion comparable to that of light) But, the moment of inertia of a body is not an invariable quantity.it depends not only on the mass of the body, but also on the way the mass is distributed around the axis of rotation

In linear motion, the mass of a body is a measure of its inertia 
In rotational motion, a torque is required to produce angular acceleration in a body. In other words a body can't change by itself its rotational motion.
This inability or property of body is called rotational inertia or moment of inertia .so moment of inertia gives us an idea how easy it is to make a body in rotational motion about an axis 
There are mainly two types of moment of inertia, one is area moment of inertia and second is mass moment of inertia
Area moment of inertia is used in civil engineering for the design of columns. Given by eulers formula 
That's  P=π^(2)*EI/L^2 where I is moment of inertia of area, E is young's modulus...
