Hello.The negative sign in the above equation is an indication that the direction that the spring stretches is opposite the direction of the force which the spring exerts.It is property of spring to exert a opposing force.As the property is not liable to variation, sign of force can never change.If we try to imagine the unreal situation of change of sign, spring will exert force in direction of the force being exerted on it which is preposterous because spring will never do such action in reality.Thank you!.
