Two boys enter a running escalator at the ground floor of a shopping mall. The first boy repeatedly follows a cycle of p 1 step up and then q 1 steps down whereas the second boy repeatedly follows a cycle of p 2 steps up and then q 2 step down. Both of them move relative to escalator with a speed v r . If the boys take t 1 and t 2 respectively to reach the first floor in complete numbers of cycles, how fast is the escalator running? Dear student

I have solved question by taking p1 = 1, q2 = 2
p2 = 2, q1 = 1
Vr = 50
t1 = 250
t2 = 50

Let the speed of escalator be x.

speed*time=displacement

and displacement covered by both of them is from ground floor to first floor

therefore,

(50-x)250=(50+x)50.

12500-250x=2500+50x

-200x=-10000

x=(50cm/s)/2.

=25cm/sec

Why I use
p2 = 2, q1 = 1
Vr = 50
t1 = 250
t2 = 50
??????????????????????????????
??????
????????????????
