To cross the river in the shortestdistance,aswimmer shoule swim making angle ‘x’ with the upstream.what is ratio of time taken to swim across in the shortest time to that in swimming across over shortest distance.(assume speed of the swimmer in the still water is greater than the speed of river flow.

Crossing the rivver in shortest time = >
t = l/Vcosthetha 
where thetha is the angle he make with the vertical.
And for shortest path he has to travel perpendicularly with 
t = l/root(V^2 – Vr^2)
