The rotation of the Sun can be monitored by tracking sunspots, magnetic storms on the Sun that appear dark against the otherwise bright solar disk. Figure shows the initial positions of five spots and Fig the positions of these same spots one solar rotation later. What can we conclude about the physical nature of the Sun from these observations? Figure shows the initial positions of five spots and Fig the positions of these same spots one solar rotation later. What can we conclude about the physical nature of the Sun from these observations?
From the motion of Sunspots, it can be observed that the sun rotates counterclockwise from the perspective of observer outside the Sun. Also, the arrow shape of the Sun spots lately accounts for the fact that the velocity of rotation near the equator of the sun is larger than the velocity near the poles (refer figure below). Therefore the sunspot near the poles of the sun moves much slowly than the sunspots near the equator.
