The masses and radii of the Earth and the Moon are M 1 , R 1 and M 2 , R 2 respectively. Their center are at a distance d apart. The minimum speed with which a particle of mass m should be projected from a point midway between the two centres so as to escape to infinity is ……… ?

Increase in P.E. of system

= {(P.E.) – (P.E.)f}

= - {[- GM1 M2/d – GM1m/ d/2 – GM2m/D/2] - [ GM1M2/d]}

= Gm/d/2 (M1 + M2)
