We can find the distance traveled by the lift using various methods. 
1. we can use the s = ut + 1/2at^2 and v = u + at.
2. we can use graphical method:
Imagine we are drawing v versus t plot. initially v is 0, at t = 0 and again v = 0 at t = t.
In between v increases linearly with slope a and then decreases linearly with slope -2a and thus v vs t looks like a triangle.
Total area under the triangle is what we need to find. Let height be h.
so h/a + h/2a = t or h = 2/3*at
area = 1/2*h*t = 1/3a*(t^2)
