Please explain. I calculated the kinetic energy if first system and then second system and then took the difference betweed them. i got the answer as (B) but in answer key provided, it is given (A). is my approach correct?

Dear Atharva,
 
First of all you have to conserve momentum then find the angular velocity of both cases .. change the angular velocity into linear velocity  ( v = omega/r ) then find change in K.E in both case and you will get heat evolved ,...
 
Your approach is also correct .…..... maybe you have done some silly mistake in it …
